Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is not engaging

Director: Carlos Saldanha

Starring: Voices by Ray Romano , Denis Leary , Queen Latifah , Simon Pegg , John Leguizamo

OyeG Review

Animation films really excite us, but having a lot of expectations about the third part of Ice Age series, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs can prove to be a letdown. High expectations are probably the downfall of a sequel; especially if the earlier versions were a big success.

As the tradition of all Ice Age films, this one too starts off with Scrat trying to hold on to acorn. Things are a little different this time. He is not alone and is accompanied by a female squirrel named Scratte, who wants the acorn as well. Manny (Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah), are expecting their first baby. Diego (Denis Leary) wants more ‘adventure’ in his life while Sid (John Leguizamo) wants to be a parent himself. A lot of trouble ensues as a dangerous set of dinosaurs awaits them.

The film has its share of merits. The ‘nut ball’ dance between the two squirrels is absolutely hillarious. The animation used is great and so are the sound effects and music.

However, the funny scenes that were so abundant in the earlier versions are very few. The story is not very engaging and drags in parts. You almost run out of patience as you wait for something to happen. The climax is also a bit unconvincing. The inclusion of a one-eyed weasel known as Buck (Simon Pegg) who hunts dinosaurs intently, is simply superb. He carries the film pretty well with is acrobats and energy.

The voice-overs continue to remain outstanding. Ray Romano and Queen Latifah are excellent. Simon Pegg uses his voice brilliantly. John Leguizamo is decent and so is Denis Leary.

Though Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is not as appealing as the first two installments, it is still worth a watch. Go freeze yourself all over again!
