Frozen revolves around the family of Laysa who lives with her father Karma (Danny Denzongpa) and her younger brother Chomo (Skalzang Angchuk Gultuk) in a remote village in the Himalayas. Karma is desperately trying to make ends meet with his small business. He wants to clear his debts for a better future of his family.
His troubles increase as one day the army moves and settles very close to his house, thereby vanishing the peace and serenity of the place. Furthermore, it prevents any possibility of Karma to sell his flat to clear the debts.
Frozen scores high on the technical aspects. It is shot brilliantly. Even the black and white medium is not a deterrent in capturing the picturesque locations of Ladakh. The cinematography is breathtaking with some excellent shots and enhances the beauty of the place. The background score has been used to good effect. The editing is good but the overall film is pretty slow. Frozen almost freezes as you wait for things to happen but end up being disappointed as it doesn’t move anywhere.
Talking about the performances, it is refreshing to see Danny Denzongpa in a non-negative role. He gives an extra ordinary performance playing and ordinary character. Gauri is a new talent to watch out for. She proves that she has great acting skills.
It is a good attempt which goes haywire in the penultimate moments leaving many questions unanswered.
The DVD includes the film’s making titled ’75 crazy people’ and a pullout brochure with rare information about the film.
It is strongly recommended for its superb cinematography and wonderful editing.
