Marley & Me

Director: David Frankel

Starring: Owen Wilson , Jennifer Aniston , Eric Dane , Kathleen Turner , Alan Arkin

OyeG Review

Once in a while there comes a film that stays with you long after the end credits begin to roll. Marley & Me is definitely one of them.

Marley & Me follows the story of newly wed couple, Jennifer and John Grogan (Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson) who shift to a warmer Florida from Michigan. They get jobs in competing newspapers as journalists, buy a new house and face the different challenges that life throws at them.  It is just when they are contemplating about starting a family, John’s friend Sebastian Tunney (Eric Dane) suggests that they should buy a puppy to see it they ready to raise a child. In comes the incorrigible pup Marley and their entire life changes!

Direction:
David Frankel must be credited for bring out the best performances out of his entire cast and especially the dog. There are a lot of scenes in the film that manage to have a strong impact like the scene in which Marley swallows a chain and what happens after that or the one in which he jumps in someone else’s pool and while chasing him John pretends that he is not his dog. There is hardly any dull moment in the rollercoaster film which makes you laugh as well as cry. But in the end you only come out smiling!

Performances:
The performances are simply outstanding. Owen Wilson is very natural in his acting. He carries his role perfectly. Jennifer Aniston is effortless with her performance. The best thing about them is that you forget that they are actors and you are easily able to relate with them. The kids in the film are very adorable. But the star of the film is the dog, Marley who carries almost the entire film on its shoulders wonderfully.

OyeG Verdict:
Marley & Me is an outstanding film in all respects; performances, story, script, comedy and drama. Make sure you do not miss it whether you are a dog lover or not!

what?? Four stars for Marley? A too mushy plot, an uncute dog and a meandering story line ( was there a story?). It was watchable and had a couple of funny moments ( like Marley at the Training school) A predictable sob ending. Marley..is just a pleasant, timepass movie. Watch it on DVD on a slow weekend.
